Onsite Cake Decorating

Onsite Only Competition

The Onsite Cake Decorating competition provides an individual student the opportunity to showcase his/her culinary artistic talents and creative abilities. The student will be responsible for bringing materials to create the cake design(s). This competition is designed to encourage creativity, and innovation, and reward culinary artistic talent. A club may have only one entry for Onsite Cake Decorating. A club may enter a student in both Division I and Division II. A student may use an electronic device during the competition for inspiration.

Time Limit: 1 Hour

Cake Decorating Guidelines

  • No materials will be provided. The artist is responsible for bringing a tote that is limited to the following items: all pre-made icing (in bags, tubs, or tubes) ready to use, decorating tips, ten toothpicks, couplers, maximum of three cake dummy rounds no larger than 9”, spatula, smoother (no knives), cake turntable, roll of paper towels, wipes, and cake cardboard base. Each artist is required to bring a drop cloth/plastic tablecloth for both the table and floor and a trash bag for disposal.

  • The cake decorative surface must be clean and clear of marks, designs, etc. The coordinator will check prior to the competition starting.

  • Fondant may not be used.

  • No stencils.

  • A student is allowed to use a maximum of 3 round cake dummies for layering. The finished product cannot exceed 12” x 12”.

  • The cake dummies used may not be larger than 9” rounds.

  • Decorating of the cake should reflect the National Beta Convention Theme - Radiate. Participants must incorporate three Beta element on the cake (i.e. symbols, items, words, etc. pertaining to National Beta) in addition to the theme.

  • All decorations for the cake need to be made onsite using the icing. All icing must be premade and colored in advance inside of containers or piping bags. Color creativity is encouraged.

  • No pre-assembly of cake dummies prior to the competition.

  • A student will have 1 hour to complete the onsite cake decorating entry.

  • Each entry will be judged holistically by a panel of judges.

  • Register students and then select competitions to enter.
  • Check the students that will participate in this competition.

Judging Criteria

*Holistic style judging will be used to determine the award winners in the competition. Judges will use the following to determine the winners:

Creativity – originality, innovation, coloring

Technique - application and experimentation of medium, texture

Primary visual impact - subject matter based on convention theme

Presentation – appearance, overall artistic appeal

Complexity - degree of difficulty
